First Day Back!
it is just the first day back but already so much is done. We have divided into teams, cleaned, built, juggled, whistled and played basketball! Collaborated and succeeded!!!
I was in a team with Alice, Marlene, Isidora and Jiji and we were responsible for the shelter building activity. To be honest, I had never before been faced with the prospect of building a shelter so I was much a newbie at it as the Year 12s but fortunately Isidora showed me how it should be done and now I can proudly say I can make a relatively unstable shelter which can house half a person :) But even so I am sure with more practice and better materials ( I had solely paper and magazines as well as sticky tape to equip myself with from the potential rain and snow !!!) I will become better at building shelters!
Without doubt the people who partook in this activity had achieved one of the 8 aims - partook in new challenges. It also made everyone more aware of the fact that most of the materials are carelessly thrown out each day like paper, gloss magazines and plastic (most of which are not even recycled) and we personally saw how much can be done with them. Although seemingly a solely fun activity it nevertheless showed how much can still be done in our school to decrease waste. Our paper conservation project had gotten a couple more volunteers that day too!!!
Although not all of us necessarily engaged in building shelters - We had all participated in the quite challenging judging process . There are a many aspects to a successful shelter and we were discovering them for ourselves as we watched the builders. Sturdy, easily accessible and hopefully waterproof are only the first very basic requirements we found necessary for the winner to fulfill. Competition for materials had often gotten out of hand so we had to ensure everyone had equal shares of paper and sticky tape and ABSOLUTELY no scissors.
Even as judges we are supposed to be impartial it was very hard to resist giving them a little nudge in the right direction so i guess we can say that we too felt a part of the team building. To be completely honest I particularly encouraged the team which had used my design for a shelter - they were partially successful , as an architect i still have plenty of work to do :)
Deciding on the winner required all our cooperation skills since they were all pretty good and it was almost impossible deciding on the perfect one. Everyone sees the perfect shelter differently :)
Although building a shelter does not directly touch on the theme of global complications, indirectly it does - as Alice has duly noted it does make us think about those who would have to build those shelters and thus cause us to think about what we can do to change that!
