Hello everyone!
Having completed the sustainability week projects it is definitely possible to say that we all can cut back on our carbon footprints. I personally require at least 5 planets! Or if I am extra honest 7 :( I couldnt believe it when I saw the figure - I was not aware that the figure was that high - guess it just shows how much more still we can do to promote sustainable development - Im sure most of the Russian population is not completely aware of their ecological footprints!
Today, we have also found out that the school has an incredibly large carbon footprint due to the massive paper output it produces. The IT room is like a newspaper press room, spewing out paper here and there - most of the paper ends straight in the bin and people are not extra careful about how much they print - double sided printing is almost never used
Sadly, most of it is never used again and is labeled waste which is why for a sustainable world is not acceptable. This gave Nataly and me an idea to plan a paper conserving project ensuring that people are aware how much we throw out at school each week and what we can do to cut down on the pure losses.
Mr. Turnbull had talked to us about the possibility of developing a system in the school which would permit to not only reuse the paper in school, but to also cut back by 25% altogether in a two yea period. To achieve this we, in groups, had to come up with a plan of possible aims.
My group (Josi, Nataly, Marlene) have come up with these:
1. Use the used paper as drawing paper for the lower grades.
2. Rely more on the use of textbooks rather than photocopies
3. Initiate electronic forms of communication
4. Explain to the students the principles of printing so to
avoid unnecessary printouts.
5. Establish the idea of "One Plastic Cup Per Day" so to conserve the plastic our school uses.
We have planned these strategies and can now start them! |
