I had visited another IB school, the Anglo American School of Moscow to participate in a charity event they were hosting - Cancer run. They were aiming to raise money to donate to a breast cancer charity which helped thousands in 2007 obtain medical help.
The run went around the local park which was about 50 km in total and you had the option to run , jog or simply walk the distance. I had alternated between each of these and had realized that perhaps I should have practiced more for the running part. Even so it was a great day , the weather luckily was amazing and running with my friends through the forest was fantastic! Many people joined the run on its way and by the end of it we were quite a long column with several cyclists in our midst too.
The second part of the was dedicated to the a speech by the charity's representative and a concert with a lottery whose payments would go to the charity. I learned a lot from the presentation since in Russia charities rarely explain in detail the exact nature of their proceedings - this was a great opportunity to find out what exactly what they do and how I could get involved!
I met several members of the charity and they told me of their next meetings and that I was welcome to join.
Inspired by this and talking to the representative of the International Women's Organization here in Moscow, I had organised a clothes donating charity at school together with Nataly and Guintare. We collected the clothes and brought them to the Organisation. The following Sunday we had participated in the sale of all the items collected and the proceedings went to the Moscow Cancer Charity. My school had also organised a Movember (charity for men's cancer) and our collections went straight on to the charity's website.
Hopefully, we can continue donating as our next clothes project is coming up! |
