Debating Society       Another Debating Society Session has come to end and I am pleased to say that I had increased my public speaking skills; at first I’ ll admit I was very nervous going up in front of the other Year 12s and Year11s and debating whether the media is having a negative effect on us or no but in the end the heat of the discussion quickly took away all nervousness. It was interesting to find out about other people’s opinions how they saw the media – some argued that we were being exploited used as test runs for adverts whilst others saw the media as one of the best things that had happened to human technological progress. In my opnion the media had without doubt given many people a chance to find out things they may never get an opportunity to learn about in school. As a tool spread information and increase the population’s awareness in different matters it was invaluable; this is not even mentioning the fact that television radio have also helped make people aware of the possible dangers; for example warning about an approaching hurricane or the upcoming flood. However the media has been misused many times as well, adverts often turn into propaganda of certain values which many find as too provocative, or disagree with. However even so the media gave a chance for these views and other to be expressed so we cannot underestimate how much we rely on it today.   Personally, I feel that the media also provides leisure time for us after stress day at school or work. Assuming of course that we all do not turn into coach potatoes (which is always a risk) , television often allows to relax and submerge into a different world (of movies).     In the debate I was arguing the positive side of the media and it made me realize that when I was coming up with answers to my opponent’s arguments that I stopped to think of the media as a way to educate people i.e. Discovery Channel J instead I merely assumed that except for the routine newsflash it was simply a way to relax. However the debate made me consider why the television had originally been created and how much the media does without us even realizing it.       Hopefully, next Debating Session will be as interesting as this one was!
